There’s been something I’ve been wanting to write about for a long time that is unrelated to massage therapy and I can’t just sit here and not write about it.
Are you ever driving along and just minding your own business and you stop at a light and the person in front of you or next to you, it really doesn’t matter where they are relative to your position… anyways, you’re just sitting there and they throw trash out their window… litter!! right there!! on the ground!!
AND THE SAME GOES FOR CIGARETTES!!!

Come on people! WAKE UP!! It’s 2010…How hard is it to hold on to those fast food bags, those drive-thru cups, those cancer sticks…butts…fags…burning sticks of pewtrid smelling crap (AND CIGARETTES NON BIODEGRADEABLE!!!) as well as the trash in your car and wait until you are near a trashcan and then throw it away. There is a law out there that fines offenders of tossing cigarettes out the window…. a significant fine up to $1500.00.
I think they should fine litterbugs the same amount. Everytime someone throws garbage out there car and a cop sees it he should give that person a fine and it increases everytime they are caught doing it.
It’s ridiculous. We live in a society where there are trash cans conveniently placed and paid for by the city to help with your trash needs and if there aren’t any around please hold on to it until one is close by to throw it away. I mean, how hard is it to carry it with you or have in your car until you can find a recepticle. You bought it, your are responsible for it and as a member of this society should know how to dispose of it.

I spent about a month with my brother, who lives in Palmdale, that poor bastard…. =( He works for Fed Ex and has to drive all around the Palmdale, Lancaster, Little Rock and Lake L.A. area delivering packages to some of the worst dredges of human existence. I was with him one day, in the van helping deliver packages and we pulled up to this car getting ready to make a left turn and the driver side door opens up and this guy just sets a Burger King bag down right there on the ground in the left turn lane! the light turned green and he drives off… I’m just sitting there staring at the bag as we drive by it and getting more and more pissed by the minute! My brother, just shrugs his shoulders and says,” I see it everyday.” Everyday!! HRMPF!!
There was another time we were entering this housing tract and needed to go down this cul de sac and a few guys were standing in the street chatting, rapping, beatboxing…who knows?… anyways, one of them had a paper towel with a sandwich in it, I presume. As we approached, he finished and just let the paper towel fall from his hand. I stared in disbelief at the unconscious act and almost said something to him, but was in a Fed Ex truck and was with my brother, who was driving. I mean, COME ON!! how freakin’ hard is it to wad it up and stuff it on your pocket and wait til you get home and throw it away or at the very least, crumble it up and throw it in the gutter or at one of your buddies.
I am sick and tired of all the violators out there and nothing happening to them. This is my city, state, country too and I’m about to go postal on somebody the next time I see someone toss trash, a cigarette or some other foreign object that isn’t biodegradeable and doesn’t belong on the ground.

I’m not sorry if I offended anyone reading this, if I did then you are more than likely a low life scumbag too lazy to reach out and throw away your own refuse and be a responsible adult in todays society.

I hope you all have a wonderful existence and be good humans!!!

Good evening fellow human beings!
I hope life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness isn’t getting you down. I know life has a way of getting tough and you can’t help but stress out about it. Driving the freeways, making your way around town or just driving from point A to point B can put a lot of undue tension and unwanted stress in your life. Do you realize we spend more than half our lives in our cars. Vacationing, driving to work, taking the kids to school, grocery shopping… taxi driver, limo driver, bus driver alike.

Do you feel like no matter what you do you can never really get comfortable driving. You can adjust your seat and readjust it, move it forward and lean back, move it back and lean forward and still you aren’t comfortable. Does your leg go to sleep while driving? or do you feel like your back is on fire? maybe you can’t concentrate because you keep shifting in your seat and don’t know why.

Sciatic nerve problem is common among drivers who spend a lot of time on the road. The term sciatica describes the symptoms of leg pain and possible weakness, tingling, numbness that originates in the low back and travels through the gluteus. Under the gluteus maximus muscle, there is a group of small but vitally important muscles. These serve to stabilize and rotate the leg at the hip. The largest of these is piriformis. It runs from the sacrum on a slight angle out to the greater trochanter, that big bony bump in the thigh when the hip sticks out to the side. The sciatic nerve has to navigate between piriformis and the other muscles, and when piriformis is tight, it compresses the nerveand down the large sciatic nerve in the back of the leg. The pain can be attributed to something as simple as a wallet in the back pocket or bad seat position to a herniated disc or spinal stenosis that is compressing or irritating the nerve roots.
Sciatica occurs most frequently in people between 30 and 50 years of age but is not specifically an older person malady. Often a particular event or injury does not cause sciatica, but rather the sciatic pain over time tends to develop as a result of general wear and tear on the structures of the lower spine.

I have worked on several patients with pain resulting from pain on one side of the buttock or in one leg that is worse when sitting, they feel burning or tingling down the leg or weakness, numbness or difficulty moving the leg or foot.I start the massage with a hands-on assessment of the entire lower back and buttock area. Often the lower back muscles are also involved in the source of pain. I concenrate on piriformis, starting with the edge along the sacrum. Adjusting pressure and technique depending on the person. Sometimes what is most effective is gentle vibrations on the buttock and sacrum. Other times, the deep work does the trick. Trigger point therapy is another type of massage that is highly effective in pain relief and can be done at home. There are times when all the work I’ve done cannot bring relief and a physician is sought out. I try not to refer out unless all avenues have been exhausted. In time and with lots of therapy and relaxation a patient can resume his or her normal daily activities without any pain.
Other times the patient has to seek out what’s best for them and figure out the best way to alleviate the pain.
I have read and researched several ways to help take away the pain to some degree. Inverted traction offers immediate relief from many forms of back pain and spasm associated with compression and rotational fatigue. Inversion relaxes and stretches tensed up muscles and may add flexibility and lubrication to the joints. In many cases reducing the symptoms of sciatica, pinched nerves and even compressed discs and ruptured discs.
Inversion is a natural stimulation that increases circulation and accelerates the flow of blood, lymph and spinal fluid. Many people have found that it reduces shoulder tension, stimulates mental alertness, increases skin and hair health, and reduces the effects of aging caused by gravity and poor circulation. After a long day on your feet hanging at a 45 degree angle for about 20 minutes can create a marvelous feeling of rejuvenation.

I would also highly recommend that you frequently apply ice compresses alternately with moist heat compresses to the hip area over the sciatic pain. If you consult a massage therapist, they should be familiar with the Accupressure points

I hope I have helped you to some degree and made you more aware of the stress and tension in your life and how you can cope with the pain in your butt!

My brother, as a child had growing pains and some major stomach problems due to ulcers from being stressed and nervous most of his teen years. We both experienced the same things and were going through the same ordeal, yet I had more sensitivity issues while my brother’s problems were more internal. Teens worry too much about the everyday events from the next football game, Friday’s tests or tomorrow’s activities. This leads to anxiousness, worry and fear for no reason at all. Benefits of massage are well documented. According to studies conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine among them relief of muscle tension, lowered stress from hormones, increased sense of relaxation and even a heightened ability to concentrate.
As a teen growing up in a divorced household, my brother and I could have benefited from massage therapy due to stress, anxiety and sleeplessness. There were times when I didn’t know what to do about feeling sore from sports and being active during the day. Changes in my body or behavior were happening all the time. I believe giving massages is beneficial for the growing teen; mental health, biological health and emotional health.
As far as health goes, teens worry a lot about their bodies. Biological changes happen whether they want it to or not. The teenage body is in the midst of transformation, exponential growth and development. Puberty can’t be stopped and there are ever changing growth spurts throughout their teen years. They are on a rollercoaster ride of hormones and need to experience the calming effects of massage. “Many teens are self-conscious, and not happy with their bodies,” says Eeris Kallil, massage therapist and shiatsu instructor at the Boulder College of Massage Therapy, in Colorado. “Massage can help teens stay grounded.” Bodywork has also been reported to help mediate eating disorders, a growing concern among teens.
Emotionally, teens are a mess. They want their independence, they want to be heard. They want confidence and have the feeling like they have self worth. It’s in these thoughts that make the teen feel turmoil and angst and are in desperate need of a massage. Urbandictionary.com describes teen angst as “A condition akin to depression effecting American teen aged youth. Typically accompanied by well justified feelings of inadequacy and a desire to end one’s life” and “a term used to describe idiot teens going through puberty who think they’re depressed when it’s actually just their hormones taking control of their brains”. This is where I feel massage would greatly benefit most teenagers, especially a Swedish massage. The Swedish massage is a relaxation type of massage with long, fluid strokes concentrating on the well being of the individual on the table. The massage therapist utilizes many different techniques and aromatherapy devices; such as candles, soothing music, light and always asking if the client is comfortable and how the pressure of the massage is. This in turn, makes the teen at ease and relaxes enough for the massage to take effect. Many sufferers from sports injuries and chronic pain also benefit from Swedish, whereas Shiatsu can help alleviate the pain associated with a wide range of conditions. Shiatsu can also assist an individual with their self development and self healing; balancing the underlying causes of a condition; taking into account the functioning of the physical and psychological; promoting health and strengthening the body’s own healing abilities.
Another potential plus, a beneficial, therapeutic relationship can develop between body workers and teenagers during the years when adolescents need adult confidantes, but keep parents at a distance. The practitioner can become a supportive, trusted adult in a teen’s life. The session itself, according to Kallil, can be a way to deal with all the physical and emotional turmoil of this tender age.
In conclusion, I have been asked by many friends and co-workers about the effects of massage on their children and teenagers, ‘if it can help with everything from aches and pains from sports’ ‘ADHD and some disorders’ ‘stress and puberty related issues due to hormonal changes’ ‘depression and teen angst’. As you can see the benefits of massage in teens is clear. It can help on many levels and at many ages from tweens, pre-teens to early adulthood. Being from a divorced household and being in my teens I truly could’ve benefited from massage do to sleeplessness, teen angst and depression. The overall calming effect massage has could have promoted a sense of better well being in my brother and myself.
There are many therapists out there with credentials in the massage field who help teens and children who have conditions that can be benefited from massage. It is up to the therapist and one, if not two, of the parents to sign a release form and or a parental permission slip and be present while the massage is in session according Bodyworkonline.com and beautyhealthmassage.info/ …massage/whats-the-law-regarding-giving-body-massage-therapy-to-minors-is-it-okay-under-their-mothers-supervision. These websites state many therapists who have been asked about child and teen massages and have researched laws and state codes and according to Beccy with BJB-LMP she writes “Massage, bodywork, and energy healing are very beneficial and available to people of all ages, including children. Any person age 16 and older may make their own appointments; those age 15 and under must have a parent or guardian schedule the appointment and accompany them to it. Consent forms must be signed by a parent or guardian for all clients under age 18.”
Albert Einstein once was quoted “The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving.” I feel I can give the very best of myself and my abilities to the health and wellness of the trouble teen willing to accept massage as a benefit to their well being.

Good morning fellow bloggers, I’m new to this and would like some advice for future posts.

I’m just starting out on my new adventure and can use some helpful tips on how to drum up a steady stream of business.

For years I was told, by fellow employees, friends and family I should be a massage therapist. Several years ago I went to the Bryman College in Anaheim and started to do just that. I went through the counseling, talked with the financial people, set up a class schedule and then started to take classes. I seem to be having difficulty with my work schedule, a health issue and finances. I felt like I was juggling too many things at once and wasn’t used to all running around, studying and working… so I dropped the class, of course I regretted it and here I am back at it again. Only this time I’m making more of an effort to complete the class, I’m keeping a 3.95 GPA and only working parttime. This is where I’m having difficulty. How can I find work, pay my bills on time, and continue going to school and strive for that Associate Degree in Sports Medicine? I’m stressing out!!!

Fortunately, I work for a staffing company that tries to give me as much work as I can afford to take and not disrupt my school schedule. My school (Fremont College) has been very accommodating when it has come to my work schedule and having to make up my classwork and days. But of course this isn’t enough.

I have completed modalities in Swedish, Pregnancy massage, Hot Stone therapy, some reflexology and am now working on Myofascial Release and deep tissue. I have completed the acupressure modality and learned about TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) to some degree. As tough as those sound they are fairly easy classes… except for the TCM, years and years of learning and studying is needed to understand 5000 years of knowledge.

I’ve been asked on a number of occasions about massage for teenagers. I have read several documented and copyrighted studies on massage for teenagers and only find nothing but things said about it. Here is a published document expressing the valuable effects of massage on the developing teen and how it can help with attention, stress, growth changes and aches and pains of sports and sleeping disorders.

While teens may be less likely than their parents to go to a massage therapist, there are plenty of reasons why this age group should be encouraged to give it a try. The benefits of massage are well documented, among them relief of muscle tension, lowered stress hormones, increased sense of relaxation, improved immune function, and even a heightened ability to concentrate, according to studies conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine. But for teenagers, there’s an additional payback.

The teenage body is in the midst of transformation — exponential growth and development in a rapid period of time. On the physical side, teens may be at increased risk for aches, pains, and injury. Many teens strain their bodies with competitive sports, get erratic sleep, and consume a less-than-optimal diet. Massage can help muscles recover from overuse, and help balance the body and maintain that stability.

Perhaps even more crucial, teen massage can help improve body image and sleep patterns, and contribute to decreased depression, anxiety, and stress. This keeps a teen connected to her body, even as it morphs in confounding ways.

Another potential plus: A beneficial, therapeutic relationship can develop between bodyworkers and teenagers during the years when adolescents need adult confidantes, but keep parents at a distance. The practitioner can become a supportive, trusted adult in a teen’s life. And the session itself, according to Kallil, can be a way to deal with all the physical and emotional turmoil of this tender age.

I hope this helped with any questions might have about massages for teens. I’ll try write here on a regular basis with updates on things I learn from life, massaging and funnysilly anectidotes. Take care and be good humans.
